Direct Response  Television

Can James help you with DRTV?

Yes, I can create a business plan and advert for you and bring a campaign to market. I can also manage your existing suppliers and program.

I love creating new DRTV campaigns and adverts. I offer multiple ways of working with DRTV from a single source approach to managing your agencies and stakeholders in a purely campaign manager function.

Single Source

First there is a one stop consultant approach. I can write your business case, budget, advert and source the suppliers for media and response handling. I work with a trusted production company to bring your campaign to life. I worked this way with OXFAM International and Animals Asia with excellent results.

Campaign Manager

I have considerable experience managing agencies, briefing colleagues and agencies to get to the project on track with the best chance of success. Managing various stakeholders, collecting content and briefing supplier and getting stakeholders in a single direction to your brief. If you would like to discuss your DRTV project with me, whether in the UK or overseas, please get in touch.

Individual Giving programs:

Can James manage and optimise your Individual Giving programs.

Yes, I have extensive experience managing Individual Giving programs across both acquisition and retention. Some examples are available via the links below.

Creating programs and budgets across Acquisition, Retention, Legacy and Support functions. Ensuring your charity has a clearly defined program, with a plan, budget and timings that can be delivered. Either working onsite or remotely and recruiting suppliers if required. I can also manage existing Individual Giving programs and make recommendations if required and manage and develop the staff. I can also take on individual projects as required. Examples of creating and managing Individual Giving programs successfully are seen in my work at Christian Aid, National Deaf Children’s Society, Whizz-Kidz and other charities.

"James is an Individual Giving expert with a strong specialism in acquisition. At Christian Aid the job was to rebuild the regular giving acquisition programme. James confidently and skilfully navigated the internal and external challenges to getting the programme going again. This included restarting DRTV and launching Lead Generation Campaigns and, at the time of writing, the initial results for the first two months of this financial year look really promising. He is motivated by results and seeing a charity make progress and improve. James enjoys working as part of a team, and is always willing to help, advise and contribute wherever he can. When a gap opened up in the brand team, James took on responsibility for managing the media agency and effectively deploying the brand budget. His experience was invaluable in the swift re-planning of marketing activity for Christian Aid Week 2020, following the coronavirus outbreak. He is an experienced and supportive manager, who always wants to see members of his team happy and motivated. I recommend him as a great colleague, with a depth of knowledge in acquisition strategy and planning and a commitment to working together to enhance and develop the fundraising programme." Can you help us review our program and make recommendations?

Yes, I have considerable experience working as an interim with specific objectives to improve performance and processes. I have a variety of templates and processes to ensure best practice is put in place.

Reviewing your program and finding what is working well, where we things can be improved and providing a report with recommendations. This is based on my experience with OXFAM International of providing advice to OXFAM affiliates worldwide and working through check lists of best practice to help colleagues improve their programs across the world.

Providing best practice advice and templates, working documents, across budgeting, strategy, training documents, checklists, briefing to help ensure your team have the tools needed to continue to optimise their program.

Tender and research processes:

Can James help us with a tender or research process.

Yes, I have managed tender processes for creative, media and response agencies. I have also managed research projections for the UK and other markets.

I am experienced in recruiting agencies and freelance suppliers to provide fundraising services and media buying through tender processes and can help provide experience and expertise in this area. Ensuring procurement processes are adhered to. I have also worked on market research projectsfor the UK and International markets. If I cannot help directly I can probably put you in touch with someone that can.

"Just wanted to give a big shout out in the FR Community to James Allport as it's his last day with Oxfam tomorrow. James very bravely took on the task of driving DRTV across Oxfam as a new acqusition channel. In his 3 years with us he has inspired lots of affiliates to test DRTV and supported pilots in Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, NZ, Aussie, India, Korea and Ireland. All this whilst providing a great set of best practice tools and resources to leave us with for all our future DRTV work. I know from all the thank-yous received in the past how much affiliates have appreciated his help.... but one last chance to say good-bye here.

James goes on to a new role with Christian Aid in the UK and we in the Ol team will miss him and his quirky sense of humour greatly. GOOD LUCK JAMES!"
Amanda Briggs-Hastie

Appeals:

Can you help us with an appeal we need to run?

Yes, everything from a small mailing to a multi-channel integrated campaign. I have experience as a campaign manager providing direction and support and a wide network of colleagues that can provide the required functions to support your campaign.

I have excellent experience across Individual Giving running Mass Market campaigns, like Christian Aid Week. Creating Direct Marketing strategies and integrating above the line and below the line elements to drive response and income. Using project management skills to bring internal teams and suppliers together to deliver campaigns that deliver strong results. During the COVID lockdowns I quickly took the initial and responsibility for refocusing the appeal to a combination of DRTV, Digital, Social and other direct routes. By redeploying our investment into these channels and away from Out of Home we were able to bring in £9.9m over two years plus additional income from an emergency appeal.

Planning, Strategy and Budgets:

Can you help us put in place some plans for Individual Giving?

I have considerable experience creating budgets, income projections and business cases to give structure for Individual Giving programs. This covers both acquisition and retention programs as well as innovation, legacy fundraising and operational functions and research. I have developed templates that are detailed and easy to follow and can be updated by staff on an ongoing basis.

Developing plans and strategy is also something I have successfully done. Utilising research, briefing research and translating it into an operational plan and strategy.

Two examples of this are by work for:

Christian Aid’s Acquisition Program

NDCS’s retention program

International Markets

Can you help us with projects worldwide?

Yes, I worked with OXFAM International setting up DRTV pilots in multiple countries including Australia, Sweden, Holland, Belgium and India. I have also prepared business cases and reports into the USA and German markets and much more. Recently I have worked with AMREF to set up their DRTV test in UK, Italy and Holland.

New Products

Can you help us develop new fundraising products and propositions.

Yes, at Christian Aid I ran a series of workshops that led to the creation of the Children’s Prayer Book and Prayer Journal products which delivered several years of new donors. I have also worked with charities on developing their USP and fundraising propositions and testing them and bringing them to market.

DRTV

Is a service I am comfortable providing in International Markets having done so for three years for OXFAM International. At OXFAM the successful pilots I created led to expansion into eight global markets able to deliver thousands of donors a year.

Individual Giving Consulrancy

More recently I had a key role in bringing together the AMREF global DRTV pilot for 2024 and also researching the UK market and providing details budgets over seven years for multiple fundraising scenarios. I have also carried out market research into multiple markets and provided briefings, cases for investment and reports. In addition to this providing support and expertise to colleagues from Fundraising Director level done in markets I have been asked to support and hosting global skill share workshops.

"James came into the organization fully prepared with years of experience and knowledge. His ability to survey the opportunities, outline scenarios on how to proceed and then inspire his co-workers to stand beside him as he delivers is impressive. Fundraising is a very challenging field to navigate, and James has certainly proved that he is qualified at every level to deliver."
